You Rock!

The phrase, you rock, is used to say that you really like something or someone.  It is like saying, “You are awesome!”

Example:  Thank you for helping me with my homework.  You rock!

Similarly, if you really like something, you might say that it rocks.  If you want to show even more appreciation you can say, “You rock my socks off,” or, “You rock my world!”

You rock comes from rock n’ roll music.  It is loud, exciting, and fun.  Rock n’ roll music got its name from the African American euphemism for sexual intercourse.  Referring to sex, rock n’ roll has been mentioned in lyrics and song titles since at least the 1930s.  Prior to that, rock and roll referred to the movement of a ship in rough seas.
