Weird Flex but OK

Here is a newer English phrase.  The first time this phrase was used was on December 31, 2017.  Weird flex but ok is a sarcastic remark.  It is used to make fun of someone who is bragging about an inappropriate accomplishment.  It raises more questions than answers.

Example: “I married my best friend’s dad – and now I’m her stepmom.” “Weird flex but ok.”

I think we should break today’s phrase into components to understand what is happening.  The word flex can mean to contract muscles, but it can also mean to show strength.  Lately the word flex also means to show off (like showing your strength).  So, in the context of today’s phrase, the person is showing off by bragging.

Ok can be used to show understanding or acceptance.  There are many ways that the word ok can be used.  The etymology of OK is also very interesting (perhaps a future word of the day?)  In weird flex but ok, saying ok is like saying, “good job.”  The listener might be uncomfortable but wants to show empathy or acceptance.
