Just Like Riding a Bike
Yesterday I went cycling for the first time since my leg was injured about 2.5 months ago. It was nice to get back in the saddle (bicycle seat).
I felt strange sitting on my bicycle. My injured leg felt like it was too short when I started. After about 10 minutes it was fine. Also, there weren’t many people around because of the heat. I like that. I had planned to only go out for about an hour, but I was enjoying my time, so I did a little extra. It was a beautiful day for cycling. The clouds were amazing. I think I just missed the rain. It might have rained on the other side of the river. A little rain would have been nice as it was about 32C.
It’s just like riding a bike is a way to describe an action that is familiar, but you haven’t done it in a long time. For me, it was literally like riding a bike, but the simile can be used in many situations. Once you have learned how to ride a bike and stay balanced on it, cycling should always feel natural. This is true even if it has been a long time since you have cycled. That is where this simile comes from.
Example: “I didn’t know that you could play piano.” “It’s just like riding a bike. I learned when I was young.”
What skill haven’t you practiced in a while? Give it a try this week and see if it is like riding a bike.
