Go home, you're drunk

On my way home from playing board games in Daejeon, I stopped at LotteMart. I had to pick up a few things for cheesecake and also for dinner. When I went to check out, a man who had just finished paying for his groceries stopped and asked me where I am from. The way that he leaned towards me without breaking eye contact made me feel a little uneasy. I also hate it when people try to talk to me like this. I just want to live my life. I told him where I was from in a rude way to indicate that I didn’t want to talk to him. He didn’t go away and started looking through the items I ordered (not touching them). I was still unloading my items and thinking of how I was going to get away from this creep when the cashier told him to go home. The way she told him was dismissive, it reminded me of the phrase, “go home, you’re drunk.” The man was obviously not drunk but he might have had a mental disability. He didn’t seem normal. Anyways, I was really appreciative because I was worried he was going to follow me to my car.

Meaning

Go home, you’re drunk is a newer expression to say that someone is acting silly. It can also be used to tell someone to go away. The person does not need to actually be drunk to use this phrase. The expression can also be used to describe an unfortunate situation or a failure usually as a tagline for a meme. This phrase is used in a joking way and is not serious.

Example: Troy, why do you have that lampshade on your head. Go home, your drunk.

Origin

Go home dad

Since this phrase has been used colloquially to tell a drunk person to go home, it is difficult to pinpoint when it became a meme. The first appearance of this phrase in a image is from a bathroom wall where it says, “Go home dad, you’re drunk.” The image dates to October 6th, 2008. Variations of the phrase have substituted father with plane, Poseidon, cow, bear, and many others.

Fun Fact: There is a Finnish word, kalsarikannit. It is the feeling when you are going to get drunk alone in your underwear at home with no intention of going out. Go home Finland, you’re drunk!
