This proverb is saying that what you do is more important than what you say. I find it quite frustrating when someone says all the right things, but clearly doesn’t live by those words.
Let’s say someone keeps telling everyone else about volunteering at a homeless shelter. They tell everyone to volunteer, but they never volunteer themselves. We would tell that person, “Hey, actions speak louder than words.”
This phrase brings up an interesting debate topic: Are people defined by what they do? A lot of people feel that they are a good and wonderful person. But, when it comes time to help a friend, they aren’t there. We also like to make up scenarios and guess how we will act in those situations. For example, if I saw someone trapped in a burning building, I would break the window and save them. However, it is difficult to know how we will act in that situation. Would you really be brave enough to enter the fire?
