A Dangerous Place
Daiso is a dangerous place for me. If you aren’t from Korea or Japan, Daiso is a discount variety store. I went there last night to pick up some Tupperware and Christmas decorations. I spent 44,000 won. The reason why the store is dangerous for me is because they have a lot of interesting and weird things that are cheap. I often make impulse buys. Yesterday, I bought a pizza cushion. It was in the pet section and I think it is a cat bed. It wasn’t expensive and I might be able to use it for a play or something. I have a box of props at work that I have been collecting over the years. A lot of things came from Daiso.
Meaning
An impulse buy is an unplanned purchase. They are usually smaller purchases (but can be large) based on irrational thinking and emotion. When you go to the grocery store, there are some small items like batteries and candies near the cashier. They are placed there for impulse buying.
Example: I know that I don’t need another teddy bear, but it was so cute that I made an impulse buy.
Origin
The term, impulse purchase, comes from research done from 1948 to 1965 by the Dupont company. A lot of research on impulse buying has been conducted since then. One article found that impulse buyers seek novelty and are hyperactive. The buyers have a positive feeling about the product that leads them to buy it. Impulse purchases may even overrule will power.
There are three things that tend to make up an impulse buyer: desire for pleasure, lack of self-control, and a need to impress others. I have all three traits. It might explain why I have so many weird and useless items around my house. I mean, I spent $70 on an anti oloid! How about you? Are you an impulse buyer? What have you bought recently?
