The Missing Piece of the Puzzle
Last week my friend sent me a lot of chocolate and a puzzle from America. Actually, he sent me the chocolate to share, but I have a problem and I ate way too much. I had a stomach ache all last week! Well, I also have a little problem with jigsaw puzzles. I am obsessive about completing them. So, I stayed up late and finished the puzzle in two nights. Or, I almost finished the puzzle. There was one piece missing! After searching for a few minutes, I found it on a chair under a towel.
In my story, the missing piece of the puzzle was a literal piece of a puzzle. But the phrase can also be used figuratively to talk about a last piece of information or thing to complete something. The phrase alludes to a missing jigsaw puzzle piece.
Example (information): The tiktaalik was the final piece of the puzzle for understanding evolution.
Example (thing): You are the missing piece of the puzzle for our team. Without you we were not complete.
