Give a Man a Fish…

Give a man a fish and he eats for a day.  Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.  This proverb can be stated in a few different ways.  The phrase can be traced back to 1885 when Anne Isabella Thackeray Ritchie wrote, “… if you give a man a fish he is hungry again in an hour.  If you teach him to catch a fish you do him a good turn.”  No matter how it is written, the meaning remains the same.  If you give someone something, they won’t learn how to be self-sufficient.  However, if you teach them how to do something, they won’t have to rely on you.

For me, this phrase is quite useful in teaching.  I think a good teacher knows the difference between teaching and telling.  A good teacher strives to make students self-sufficient learners.

Today’s post was inspired by a video of my father catching a big bass from his pond.  Great catch!
