You Made My Day

Prom Date

This morning a trainee stopped me to chat and give me a gift. Random gifts are not uncommon, so I took it and said thank you. It was a memo pad from Jeju. I made some comments and asked about the QR code on the back of the package. She said that I should scan it and see. To be honest, I was a little worried about it being a computer virus. But I scanned it anyways and it was a slideshow presentation asking me to prom. It made my day.

Prom is a dance party for high school students. It is a tradition in America and Canada. There are similar customs in England and Australia. Other Western countries have similar dance parties, usually in the winter. A lot of countries have a 100-days party with a dance to celebrate having only 100 days left in the school year. We are having a prom at work to expose trainees to that culture. I never went to my own prom, so this is also an experience for me.

Definition

You made my day is a way to express your happiness. It is saying that it is the highlight (best part) of your day. Whatever that person did made you feel happy for the whole day. I think it is short for, “You have made my day better.”

Example: Thank you for the flowers, you made my day!

Go ahead, Make my day

You made my day dates to 1909, but only became popular with the Clint Eastwood film, Sudden Impact (1983). His character, Harry Callahan, uses the phrase as a threat saying, “Go ahead, make my day.” He was daring another character to do something irrational. Since then, the line has been referenced a lot in film and daily life.

However, there is a difference between make my day and you made my day. Today’s phrase is exclusively used to describe happiness.
